Why don't you ...............

We are seeking volunteers for our very successful shared reading programme. This would involve:

Being available from 8.50am – 9.30am one to five mornings each week – whatever might suit you.

Reading along with children, to encourage them to read and make it an enjoyable experience for them.

If you are interested, please contact Ms. Murphy at room 5 in St. Louis Infant School. Mums, dads, grandparents and other relatives and friends are welcome to offer their services.

All adult volunteers must sign our adult volunteer forms indicating that they have never been convicted of an offence which would preclude them from working with children.

Take every opportunity  to spend quality time with your child. Some weekend or holiday activities could include taking  a tour of Dublin or Ireland; visiting Trinity college; the national gallery or the museum; going for a walk in Wicklow, going swimming, visiting the Viking exhibition, making a weekly trip to the library; visiting a gallery; teaching your child some old games you played as a child; learning to play an instrument; organising a picnic for your family letting your child organise the shopping list, prepare the food and write the invitations!.......

Remember that maths games are a wonderful way of teaching your child all sorts of concepts, from turn-taking and sharing, to winning and losing ,to number, sequence and combining and much much more. The language of maths is very important- gig, bigger, biggest-comparing, first, second...last, shapes, weight, colour, size, money, times of the day, spatial awareness etc. Always allow your child the opportunity to solve a minor problem, you might be surprised how well they may do it. This is also a super way of seeing how your child thinks and approaches a problem. It is very often in a much more positive and simple manner than an adult!! It may also put a smile on your face- a good way to start any  puzzle or problem-solving! An example of this may be how to divide sweets among children fairly or how to know how many potatoes to buy for the dinner/ice-creams to buy for desert..... have fun!!!

Encourage your child to listen to their 'inner voice'. This can help them learn to think, learn to control their emotions and develop their language skills.

Check out www.dltk-teach.com, it's a good website for children's learning. The site at ngfl.northumberland.gov.ukm is good for nursery rhymes.

A Great website to check out this month is www.wartoft.nu/software/sebran - it is great fun and a good learning resource. The games and activities are great for maths concept reinforcement.

www.primarygames.com is good too.

Go to www.crickweb.co.uk and play the Early Years and Key Stage One activities- super for literacy and maths activities. The odd one out game in the Fun Games section is great for first class children- difficult at first but once one's eye is trained in it becomes a great fun challenge for your child.

Go to www.starfall.com and check out the literacy section- lots of games, interactive stories and clips to play with.

Go to www.coolmath-games.com for great fun with your child. These activities can reinforce what your child is learning.

Go to www.toytheatre.com/piano-puppet.php to play some music of your own!
