History of the School

St. Louis Infant School was founded by the Sisters of St. Louis in 1940 and it shares a campus with St. Louis Primary School. Both schools operate as separate units, but share many facilities in common; school yard, Millennium playground and the assembly hall. The school shared the resident caretaker of 61 years - Mr. Cullen until 2001.

The first principal of the school was Sr. Scholastica Gibbons. She served as principal for an astonishing 33 years. The first lay principal was appointed in 1998. Many past pupils will recall that the teaching staff was comprised of nuns. Today there are no nuns on the teaching staff. However, we still benefit from the support and guidance of the St. Louis Sisters who, along with the Rathmines parish are joint trustees of the school.

St. Louis Infant school has always been a co-ed school. Boys spent their first three years in school in the infant classes.

Many of our leading Irish singers and musicians began their musical careers as members of Cantairí Óga Átha Cliath. Cantairí Óga Atha Cliath was founded in St. Louis Primary School in 1961 by Prionsias O Ceallaigh. The choir is now conducted by Brian O Dubhghaill. The choir recorded several records for Gael Linn in the 1960s, including Trup Trup a Chapaillín and Fuaireasa Cuireadh. These vinyl LPs have been digitally re-mastered and are now available on CD.

The current enrolment of the school is 292 pupils. The school has a total staff of 18 teachers, 11 class teachers, 3 Special Education Teachers and 2.5 English Language Support Teachers and the principal, Ms Mulkerrin.

Our school benefits from many facilities; large spacious classrooms, a large multi-purpose hall complete with stage and grand piano, large school yards, and in 2001 our purpose built Millennium playground was officially opened by Dr. Michael Woods. We have newly refurbished toilets, windows and ramp access for those who may need wheelchair access.
